Building Efficiency Methodology

The SID Building Efficiency Methodology, honed over years of work on high-performance building projects in Detroit, guides engagement with community partners and the decision-making process throughout our involvement.

The methodology begins with a pre-planning phase to assess the building design and set energy reduction goals in collaboration with our community partner. We then work with the design team to minimize energy demand using best practices in thermal envelope design and high-performance systems, followed by the selection and design of renewable energy systems like solar to create a “net-zero energy ready” design with potential for future expansion.

Throughout the design process, we are closely involved in identifying tax incentives, grants, and other financial resources for our partners to leverage for these sustainable features. A rarity in the world of building and construction, we not only support the sustainable design process, we also rigorously verify building performance both during construction and post-occupancy, reviewing utility costs, performing real-time energy monitoring, and implementing other forms of analysis to optimize energy efficiency even further.
